Undelete Your Files: Here's How To Do It...

The undelete process is something that happens to most people that work on a computer regularly...and who doesn't these days? Get distracted for even a few seconds, and you can accidentally delete a file.

The key thing to remember is: In most cases, you can undelete files, but the determining factor is whether other data has overwritten the deleted file you are trying to recover. Using a utility or hiring an expert is the only way to find out.

Your solutions

The following question may sound obvious to many of you, but I cannot tell you how many calls have ended, without having to use any undelete data recovery software, by asking: "Have you tried looking in the recycle bin on your desktop, and using the search function in the start menu?" Have you? If not, go try to get your files here first. If you have already attempted this, you have two more options: An undelete utility and file recovery services. Both solutions can be found on this site.

For your information:

The following conditions must exist to recover files that have been deleted:

  • the lost file must still exist in the directory
  • the sectors that had been used by the deleted file must not yet be overwritten
  • the file must not have been fragmented

The Directory

To achieve a successful recovery, the previously deleted file must still exist in the directory itself. In other words, the undelete process requires that the lost data that you are seeking to restore not be overwritten by a new or different file, which has been been created within the same directory.

The Sectors

In addition to the directory, it is necessary that the sectors themselves, in which the original and sought for file was positioned, not be overwritten with new data.

Fragmented files

Finally, in order for an undelete to succeed, it is necessary that the file in question not be fragmented since it was deleted. In other words, the sectors within the disk which the data once had occupied must remain in sequential order, undisturbed, and not fragmented.

It's time to start recovering

Accidentally deleted files can be recovered easily, but you need to act quickly, before another file is saved in its place. If this happens, you are out of luck. Get started by downloading and using an undelete software, or by calling a disk expert, because these methods are the only way you will ever know if your lost data can be recovered.

Several undelete disk utilities and service solutions are available within this website. And you might check out a file backup program as a disk management solution to protect yourself from further data loss.
